Bio

Josh Jones is an oceanographer with expertise in the use of passive acoustic monitoring for the study of marine mammals and ocean environments, with a research focus in the Arctic. His research has involved a combination of underwater passive acoustic recordings and satellite remote sensing data, as well as collaboration with Indigenous communities, non-governmental organizations, and other stakeholders.

Josh’s research has focused on advancing passive acoustic monitoring in Arctic waters through, (1) improving understanding of acoustic signals produced by Arctic marine mammal species, (2) improving the spatial context for detections of underwater acoustic signals and the comparability of acoustic observations across different locations and environmental conditions, and (3) producing baseline measurements of natural and anthropogenic underwater sound levels. A combined goal of this research is to improve the strength of inference about animals and the ocean from long-term underwater acoustic observations.

Josh is the recipient of the 2023 Walter Munk Scholar and Commemorative Lecture Award presented by the Marine Technology Society and the Walter Munk Foundation for the Oceans.
